Did you notice that I changed the blog title?

Here comes some more text blocks! Whoo! 🙃

I have finally set some goals to write my first full-length 40,000 word novel. I am almost positive it will be complete trash, but you've got to practice right! Writing is like any art medium! You practice, practice, practice! It'll be a hurdle I am sure as I already struggle with my inner demons on any given day as it is.

I decided that it was time to give a novel a try and I will be working on that for the foreseeable future, I am not too sure if I will try and tackle more short stories simultaneously yet. I imagine I will wait until I get a decent chunk of this novel done before I attempt to multi-task between more than one story.

If you are curious about the novel, all I want to share with you right now is that it takes places in my fictional town of Gladstone and of course more spooky things are happening (I will say what I just told you is liable to change #unreliablenarrartor). I am just in the outlining stage and I have done effectively a third of it, so there's still much more to get done on that front.

In all honesty, it feels really great to be making these goals for myself and I am proving that I can at least do it! I go through these weird moments where I feel pressure when I am not writing, it always lingers in my mind, and conversely I also feel so much pressure when I am writing.

When I finish the first draft, it will be a huge boost of confidence for me and I am looking forward to that very much.

I also submitted my first story into the professional market. The results were... well, exactly as I expected them to be. I was rejected. But as the late great Ray Bradbury said, "You only fail in writing if you stop."

A quick update on my process, I have gotten substantially better at creating a good writing routine. I have written for 10 of the last 14 days, producing a whopping average of 1,000 words a day. I have found though my concentration can be versatile, it is best for me to write for 3 or so hours before I go to work during the week. On weekends, or on my days off, I try to devote 5+ hours to writing.

READING LISTS:

  • The Art of Fiction by John Gardner: this book is often considered a perennial classic for the --novice writer. It is very scholarly in style--which I can sometimes find off putting--but I am finding it to be very useful.
  • IT by Stephen King: This is my first run in with this massive tome. I have only finished roughly about 15% of this book. I am really liking it so far. I am seeing a tendency to see books from a writer's mind more now than I had in the past.
Alright that's all I have for you guys tonight. Thanks as always!
